How about reliving your childhood with an old-fashioned soda?
There is just something special about old-fashioned soda that makes you feel like a true North Carolinian. At Hole Lotta Doughnuts in West Jefferson, North Carolina, we don’t think we could save face in this town if we didn’t offer options such as cream soda, Orangeade, and Cheerwine. Of course, it helps that we’ve found these are the ideal accompaniment to our insanely huge and delicious handcrafted yeast doughnuts!
For something to be called “old-fashioned”, it has to have a long, rich history. Since Cheerwine began in 1917 and is the oldest continuing soft drink run by the same family, we think it uniquely qualifies. The fact that it was created right here in North Carolina during a serious sugar shortage gives us plenty to be proud of.
Cream soda, in general, has a long history, as well, and many companies out there have a version that is nothing like what was first made that caused it to be given such an odd name. While today’s cream soda has vanilla flavorings, the initial creation included egg whites and cream of tartar, along with other unusual ingredients! You can rest assured that our cream soda is a wonderful old-fashioned soda experience that tastes wonderful.
One of the things that makes Orangeade an old-fashioned soda is the natural progression from orange juice to a carbonated version. There were even non-carbonated versions made that were called Orangeade and had real fruit in them. For example, the company Green Spot got its start in 1934 with an orangeade fruit juice concentrate. Today’s Orangeade is far different, but doesn’t fail to remind you of the past with each delightful swallow.
